Die Jahresversammlungen der UN-Generalversammlung beginnen traditionell am dritten Dienstag im September. Am 21. September 1981, dem Tag der damaligen Vollversammlung, verkündete die Generalversammlung: Dieser Tag soll offiziell benannt und gefeiert werden als Weltfriedenstag (International Day of Peace) und soll genützt werden, um die Idee des Friedens sowohl innerhalb der Länder und Völker als auch zwischen ihnen zu beobachten und zu stärken.

Seit 2004 ruft der Ökumenische Rat der Kirchen alle Kirchen dazu auf, jährlich den 21. September zu einem Internationalen Tag des Gebets für den Frieden zu machen, „als eine Möglichkeit, die Zeugniskraft der Kirchen und Glaubensgemeinschaften den vielen Kräften der weltweiten Bewegung für Frieden und Gerechtigkeit hinzu zu fügen“.

DAY OF PEACE 2011: Make Your Voice Heard

Young women and men everywhere are demonstrating the power of connection by reaching out to each other, and rallying together, in the common cause of the dignity and human rights to which their peoples aspire.  

For this year's International Day of Peace observance on September 21, the UN has chosen the theme of "Make Your Voice Heard," under the overall idea of peace and democracy.  

Each year, the Universal Peace Federation and its Ambassadors for Peace around the world organize commemorations of the International Day of Peace. To read reports of activities in 2010, click here.
